What transfers and what does not

Squarespace has an export tool that creates a file WordPress can import. It is useful, but it is not complete.

• Not exported: product pages and orders, events, audio and video blocks, some galleries, forms and custom code
• Not exported: your design, fonts, colours and layouts, which need to be rebuilt
• Only one blog can be exported at a time on some sites, so sites with several blogs need extra steps
• Images may still point to Squarespace's servers after import and must be re-hosted

Squarespace to WordPress migration, step by step

1. Crawl your current site and save a list of every URL, title and meta description
2. Check Google Search Console for the pages that bring the most traffic and links
3. Set up WordPress on your new host, ideally on a staging site first
4. Export your content from Squarespace (Settings, then Import and Export) and import it into WordPress
5. Re-host images so they load from your own site, not Squarespace
6. Rebuild your design and the pages or blocks that did not export
7. Move products to WooCommerce if you sell online
8. Recreate forms and connect them to your email or CRM
9. Set titles, descriptions, alt text and schema for every page
10. Create 301 redirects from every old URL to its new URL
11. Test everything on staging: links, forms, mobile layout and speed
12. Point your domain to the new host, submit your sitemap and monitor Search Console

Protecting your rankings

Rankings are lost in migrations for predictable reasons: URLs change without redirects, titles and descriptions are dropped, pages are removed and the new site is slower. Squarespace uses URL patterns such as /blog/post-name that you may not want on WordPress. Whatever structure you choose, every old URL needs a 301 redirect to its closest new page.
